Our History

In the summer of 1950, Pat and Catherine Feeman embarked on a journey that would lay the foundation for Bear Lake Christian Church. Nestled beside the picturesque Bear Lake in Kalkaska County—spanning 300 acres and known for its clear, spring-fed waters—the Feemans began constructing a cabin that would eventually serve as a beacon for their greater vision.

The Inspiration for a Sanctuary

As the Feemans devoted their weekends to building their cabin, they faced a poignant realization: despite their regular church attendance, their dedication to construction prevented them from fully observing the Sabbath. This reflection sparked a dream—the creation of an outdoor sanctuary where vacationers and residents alike could worship in the serene embrace of nature. Located in a natural bowl shaded by pine trees, this envisioned space would serve as a spiritual haven without the need for a lengthy journey into town.

From Dream to Reality

In the mysterious yet wondrous ways of providence, 1971 saw a collective effort to build a community center, thanks to the collaboration of three Bear Lake organizations: The Improvement Association, the Women's Club, and the Township Board. Pat, Catherine, and Frances Gohrsch were granted permission to hold Sunday services at the center, providing a temporary home for their growing congregation.

Establishing a Permanent Home

In 1982, the Feemans' dream reached fruition with the acquisition of land adjacent to the community center. By 1984, through the dedication and hard work of volunteers, the log chapel that stands today was completed. This chapel honors our church's origins as a welcoming space for all, earning its affectionate nickname as the "come as you are" log church.

Embracing Our Heritage

While originally referring to attire, the nickname "come as you are" now signifies our church's broader ethos—recognizing our imperfections yet embracing one another as a community where grace prevails. Today, we celebrate our rich history and continue to invite people to join us on a journey where imperfect individuals find perfection through faith.
